Attack the Block: Last Year’s Hidden Gem
Every year at Cannes, a truly outstanding movie gets hidden by big names. Last year, “Tree of Life” “The Artist” and “Drive” overpowered Joe Cornish’s sic-fi thriller “Attack the Block.” I don’t know about the UK, but in the States, it’s easily one of the best movies you’ve never seen.
It’s brave enough to try things no other film does. While alien invasions and kids in the ghetto are nothing new, the way it’s presented is. The general rule of thumb is to make the audience like the protagonist as soon as we meet them. Here, we start as they rob people in the slums right before a drug deal.
From then on, it’s aliens like we;ve never seen, heroes we’ve never imagined, and twists we’ve never thought of.
As for this year’s festival- of course we’ll hear all about “Moonrise Kingdom” “Cosmopolis” and “Killing Them Softly” but definitely look out for “Lawless” and “Mud”
